In the mid 19th century, the physicist Wolfgang Pauli and the psychologist Carl Gustav Jung developed a philosophical position for the mind-matter problem that is today called dual-aspect monism. They conjectured a picture in which the mental and the material arise as two complementary aspects of one underlying psychophysically neutral reality to which they cannot be reduced and to which direct empirical access is impossible. This picture suggests structural, persistent,re-producible mind…

A structural-phenomenological typology of mind-matter correlations.

A typology of mind-matter correlations embedded in a dual-aspect monist framework as proposed by Pauli and Jung is presented and it is shown that the obtained typology is in perfect agreement with an empirically based classification of the phenomenology ofMind- matter correlations as observed in exceptional human experiences.

The Pauli–Jung Conjecture and Its Relatives: A Formally Augmented Outline

Abstract The dual-aspect monist conjecture launched by Pauli and Jung in the mid-20th century will be couched in somewhat formal terms to characterize it more concisely than by verbal description

Outer and Inner Dimensions of Brain and Consciousness - Refining and Integrating the Phenomenal Layers

An approach by the philosopher Rudolf Steiner is investigated, which comprises a firstperson method along with the theoretical background of what has come to be known as the mirror metaphor – an analogy for the brain as a necessary but not a sufficient basis for mental activity.

The Primordial Psyche

Scientific materialism is still influential in certain academic spheres. In this article, I examine multiple lines of empirical evidence showing that this ideology, while partially true, is woefully

Neurophenomenology and Neoplatonism

The worldview emerging from neurophenomenology is consistent with the phenomenological insights obtained by Neoplatonic theurgical operations. For example, gods and daimons are phenomenologically

The quantum-like approach to modeling classical rationality violations: an introduction

Psychological empirical research has shown that human choice behavior often violates the assumptions of classical rational choice models. In the last few decades a new research field has emerged

Beyond Conception: Ontic Reality, Pure Consciousness and Matter

Our current scientific exploration of reality oftentimes appears focused on epistemic states and empiric results at the expense of ontological concerns. Any scientific approach without explicit

Can A Quantum Field Theory Ontology Help Resolve the Problem of Consciousness?

The hard problem of consciousness arises in most incarnations of present-day physicalism. Why should certain physical processes necessarily be accompanied by experience? We begin with the assumption

The Structure-Phenomenological Concept of Brain-Consciousness Correlation 1

Based on a short presentation of the unexplained relation of brain and consciousness, the mereological fallacy is addressed as a main point of criticism on typical, especially materialistic attempts

Time-Entanglement Between Mind and Matter

This contribution explores Wolfgang Pauli's idea that mind and matter are complementary aspects of the same reality. We adopt the working hypothesis that there is an undivided timeless primordial

Quantum Physics and Consciousness: The Quest for a Common Conceptual Foundation

Similar problems keep reappearing in both the discussion about the “hard” problem of consciousness and in fundamental issues in quantum theory. We argue that the similarities are due to common

Die philosophische Bedeutung der Idee der Komplementarität

The situation called “complementarity” byN. Bohr is explained with the aid of the example furnished by the spheres of application of the contrasting concepts of “wave” and “particle” in modern atomic

Physics and Philosophy

IF Sir James Jeans finds difficulty in defining philosophy (p. 16), there is no doubt of his qualifications for the task. Emerson, in his essay on Plato as a “representative man”, defines philosophy

A new theory of the relationship of mind and matter.

The relationship of mind and matter is approached in a new way in this article. This approach is based on the causal interpretation of the quantum theory, in which an electron, for example, is

Non-commutative Geometry, the Bohm Interpretation and the Mind-Matter Relationship * .

It is argued that in order to address the mind/matter relationship, we will have to radically change the conceptual structure normally assumed in physics. Rather than fields and/or

Determinism, causation, prediction, and the affine time group

This contribution addresses major distinctions between the notions of determinism, causation, and prediction, as they are typically used in the sciences. Formally, this can be elegantly achieved by

Concepts of Reality: Primas’ Nonstandard Realism

In its growth modern science remained on the whole faithful to the general conception of knowledge of its founders, Bacon, Galilei, Descartes, Leibniz, Newton, Huygens and others; and it is not much

Horizontal and vertical determination of mental and neural states

Mental and neural states are related to one another by vertical (synchronic) interlevel relations and by horizontal (diachronic) intralevel relations. For particular choices of such relations,

Understanding Consciousness: Second Edition
