Metronome

Pre-E3 2005: Metronome Announced

A nascent Swedish developer builds an adventure in sound.

The company describes Metronome as "a next-gen adventure game where sound is your weapon." The game takes place in the dark, authoritarian city of Metronome, where the life of every citizen is dictated by the omnipresent Corporation. Everyone is compelled to work, but nobody is asking why. Your job is to find out -- and uncover the Corporation's sinister intentions.

Metronome's distinguishing feature so far -- apart from an admirable art style -- is its focus on sound. The developers intend to let players record any sound they hear. The sounds can then be played back to use as weapons, to affect other characters, or to change and manipulate objects in the world.

Team Tarsier is building Metronome with Artificial Studio's Reality Engine. Take a look at a first batch of screens to see how the game is shaping up.

We expect to hear (ha!) more on Metronome from the show floor next month. Stay tuned (ha!).

[Update: While Team Tarsier has yet to acquire a publisher for Metronome, we have been able to confirm with spokespeople from the company that their little experiment in interactive sound is intended for next-generation consoles.]
