History of the word "clanker"

There's now an article on clanker, a pejorative term for a robot. There's a discussion about how to phrase information about its early usage; it's taking place at Template:Did you know nominations/Clanker rather than the talk page, though that discussion is transcluded there and can be edited from there. Robert Asprin vs. Robert Lynn Asprin

To my surprise, quite a lot of Wikipedia articles refer to the author of the MythAdventures and Phule's Company series as Robert Lynn Asprin. As far as I know, Robert Asprin is the name that appears on all of the book covers of this author's works, and outside of Wikipedia I have never seen a source that would refer to him as "Robert Lynn Asprin", with the exception of obituaries.
