Endoscopic Management for Pyloric Stricture and Gastric Outlet Obstruction: Dilation and Stenting

Abstract

Pyloric stricture and gastric outlet obstruction can result from a variety of benign and malignant conditions. In many cases, these strictures and obstructions are difficult to manage conservatively, and they usually require intervention to treat the stricture-related complications. Although surgery is the preferred strategy for curative resection, they are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Over the past decade, various endoscopic therapies have emerged as a new option to treat the underlying etiology or alleviate symptoms of pyloric stricture and gastric outlet obstruction. These procedures include balloon dilation and stent placement. In this chapter, the indication, prerequisites, instruments, techniques, complications, and outcomes of endoscopic dilation and stenting for pyloric strictures were reviewed.
