A meta-analysis of 42 articles and 179 estimates testing the pace-of-life syndrome hypothesis as it applies to the integration of behaviors with physiological or life-history traits found little overall support for the hypothesis, and general assertions regarding phenotypic integration due to “pace- of-life” should be re-evaluated.

Do human ‘life history strategies’ exist?
- 2020
Biology
Recommendations for improving the usefulness of this human life history literature are made, including greater clarity over terminology, and more empirical data on linkages between life history traits, behavioural traits and the environment, including the underlying mechanisms which generate these linkages.
Individual variation in age-dependent reproduction: fast explorers live fast but senesce young?
- 2019
Biology, Environmental Science
Within-individual age-dependent reproduction, and reproductive senescence, are identified as key components of life history strategies that vary between individuals differing in risky behaviour, and future research should incorporate age- dependent reproduction in pace-of-life studies.
Sexual selection and personality: Individual and group-level effects on mating behavior in red junglefowl.
- 2021
Biology, Psychology
The results suggest that male exploration can play a role in sexual selection, and that sexual selection on personality is complex and contingent on the social environment.
Long‐term effects of widespread pharmaceutical pollution on trade‐offs between behavioural, life‐history and reproductive traits in fish
- 2024
Environmental Science, Biology
The results reveal that chronic exposure to global pollutants can affect phenotypic traits at both population and individual levels, and even alter individual‐level correlations among such traits in a dose‐specific manner.
Chromosome-length genome assembly of Uta stansburiana and gene expression data reveal fast pace-of-life comes with environmental stability
- 2025
Environmental Science, Biology
The authors paired long-read and Hi-C sequencing to generate a chromosome-length genome assembly, annotated genes, and analyzed patterns of differential gene expression between populations in different environments to reveal the molecular basis for shifts in pace-of-life.
