Identifying universal properties of nonequilibrium quantum states is a major challenge in modern physics. A fascinating prediction is that classical hydrodynamics emerges universally in the evolution of any interacting quantum system. We experimentally probed the quantum dynamics of 51 individually controlled ions, realizing a long-range interacting spin chain. By measuring space-time–resolved correlation functions in an infinite temperature state, we observed a whole family of hydrodynamic…

Probing spin hydrodynamics on a superconducting quantum simulator

Characterizing the nature of hydrodynamical transport properties in quantum dynamics provides valuable insights into the fundamental understanding of exotic non-equilibrium phases of matter.

Anomalous fluid flow in quantum systems

Description New regimes of hydrodynamics are probed with synthetic quantum matter Recent progress in cooling, controlling, and measuring a small number of isolated atoms or ions has led to the

Emergent universal quench dynamics in randomly interacting spin models

Universality often emerges in low-energy equilibrium physics of quantum many-body systems, despite their microscopic complexity and variety. Recently, there has been a growing interest in studying

Emergent anomalous hydrodynamics at infinite temperature in a long-range XXZ model

The conventional wisdom suggests that transports of conserved quantities in non-integrable quantum many-body systems at high temperatures are diffusive. However, we discover a counterexample of this

Universality class of a spinor Bose–Einstein condensate far from equilibrium

Scale invariance and self-similarity in physics provide a unified framework to classify phases of matter and dynamical properties near equilibrium in both classical and quantum systems. This paradigm

Superdiffusive Energy Transport in Kinetically Constrained Models

Universal nonequilibrium properties of isolated quantum systems are typically probed by studying transport of conserved quantities, such as charge or spin, while transport of energy has received

Discovering hydrodynamic equations of many-body quantum systems

This paper develops a new machine-learning framework for automated discovery of effective equations from a limited set of available data, thus bypassing complicated analytical derivations and provides a new interpretable method to study properties of quantum materials and quantum simulators in non-perturbative regimes.

Tunable transport in the mass-imbalanced Fermi-Hubbard model

The late-time dynamics of quantum many-body systems is organized in distinct dynamical universality classes, characterized by their conservation laws and thus by their emergent hydrodynamic

Quantum Simulations of Interacting Systems with Broken Time-Reversal Symmetry

Many-body systems of quantum interacting particles in which time-reversal symmetry is broken give rise to a variety of rich collective behaviors, and are therefore a major target of research in

Emergent hydrodynamics in a strongly interacting dipolar spin ensemble

This work introduces a hybrid solid-state spin platform, where the underlying disordered, dipolar quantum Hamiltonian gives rise to the emergence of unconventional spin diffusion at nanometre length scales, and enables the investigation of hydrodynamics in many-body quantum spin systems.

Nonlocal emergent hydrodynamics in a long-range quantum spin system

Generic short-range interacting quantum systems with a conserved quantity exhibit universal diffusive transport at late times. We show how this universality is replaced by a more general transport

Quasiparticle engineering and entanglement propagation in a quantum many-body system

First, the entanglement distributed by quasiparticles as they trace out light-cone-like wavefronts is observed, and second, using the ability to tune the interaction range in the system, information propagation is observed in an experimental regime where the effective-light-cone picture does not apply.

Observing non-ergodicity due to kinetic constraints in tilted Fermi-Hubbard chains

Using analytical calculations, this work experimentally studies the relaxation of an initial charge-density wave and finds a remarkably long-lived initial-state memory over a wide range of parameters, which can be attributed to emergent kinetic constraints.

Universal dynamics in an isolated one-dimensional Bose gas far from equilibrium

The results establish universal scaling dynamics in an isolated quantum many-body system, which is a crucial step towards characterizing time evolution far from equilibrium in terms of universality classes.

Hydrodynamic long-time tails after a quantum quench

After a quantum quench, a sudden change of parameters, generic many particle quantum systems are expected to equilibrate. A few collisions of quasiparticles are usually sufficient to establish

Probing many-body dynamics on a 51-atom quantum simulator

This work demonstrates a method for creating controlled many-body quantum matter that combines deterministically prepared, reconfigurable arrays of individually trapped cold atoms with strong, coherent interactions enabled by excitation to Rydberg states, and realizes a programmable Ising-type quantum spin model with tunable interactions and system sizes of up to 51 qubits.

Quantum gas microscopy of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang superdiffusion

The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class describes the coarse-grained behavior of a wealth of classical stochastic models. Surprisingly, KPZ universality was recently conjectured to also

Fermionic transport and out-of-equilibrium dynamics in a homogeneous Hubbard model with ultracold atoms

Transport properties are among the defining characteristics of many important phases in condensed-matter physics. In the presence of strong correlations they are difficult to predict, even for model
