It is concluded that at least some styles of modern groove-oriented music are characterized by an aesthetics of “exactitude” and a groove effect independent of microtiming deviations, and consequences for the aesthetic appreciation of different styles of music are discussed.

The Effect of Expert Performance Microtiming on Listeners' Experience of Groove in Swing or Funk Music

Findings show that music expert listeners were more sensitive to microtiming manipulations than non-experts, and neither the claims of PD theory nor the opposing exactitude hypothesis (that microtimed deviations are detrimental to groove) were supported by the data.

The effect of musical groove on drum set performance accuracy

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether groove could enhance motor control when playing multi-limb rhythmic patterns on the drum set. In a within-subjects experimental design, 20

Seeing a drummer’s performance modulates the subjective experience of groove while listening to popular music drum patterns

Spontaneous rhythmical movements, like foot-tapping and head-bobbing, often emerge when people listen to music, promoting the enjoyable sensation of ‘being in the groove’. Here we report the first

Seeing a drummer’s performance modulates the subjective experience of groove when listening to popular music drum patterns

Spontaneous rhythmical movements, like foot-tapping and head-bobbing, often emerge when people listen to music, promoting the sensation of being in the ‘groove’: a psychological construct that

Measuring groove: A Computational Analysis of Timing and Dynamics in Drum Recordings

This thesis presents the implementation of a generative groove system, improving on currently available humanisers for electronic music production by complementing perceptual observations about rhythm and groove with the computational analysis of musical recordings of real-life drummers by design an algorithm for the generation of genre-specific micro-timing deviation patterns.

All about that bass: Audio filters on basslines determine groove and liking in electronic dance music

Groove is defined as wanting to move the body to music. Most empirical groove research has focused on rhythmic features like microtiming and syncopation, while research on musical liking has focused

Groove in drum patterns as a function of both rhythmic properties and listeners’ attitudes

This exploratory study investigates the groove effect of 248 reconstructed drum patterns from different popular music styles and concludes that listeners’ taste, musical biographies and expertise have a strong effect on their groove experience.

Audio Features Underlying Perceived Groove and Sensorimotor Synchronization in Music

The experience of groove is associated with the urge to move to a musical rhythm. Here we focus on the relevance of audio features, obtained using music information retrieval (MIR) tools, for

Genre-typical Timbre and the Urge to Move to Music

This study investigates how timbre, an important factor in music listening, influences the groove experience, one of the most important reactions to music. We selected six short popular music bass

What musicians do to induce the sensation of groove in simple and complex melodies, and how listeners perceive it

This issue is examined with a performance experiment, in which four musicians performed six simple and six complex melodies in two conditions with the intention of minimizing and maximizing groove, and found that it was much more difficult to “take out” groove from musical structures designed to induce groove.

Swing Ratios and Ensemble Timing in Jazz Performance: Evidence for a Common Rhythmic Pattern

The timing in jazz ensemble performances was investigated in order to approach the question of what makes the music "swing," suggesting a practical limit on tone duration that may be due to perceptual factors.

Variations on a theme by chopin: relations between perception and production of timing in music.

The results suggest that musical structure (melodic-rhythmic grouping in particular) has temporal implications that are reflected not only in musicians' motor behavior but also in listeners' time-keeping abilities.

A Perceptual Model of Pulse Salience and Metrical Accent in Musical Rhythms

In Experiment 1, six cyclically repeating interonset interval patterns (1,2:1,2:1:1,3:2:1,3:1:2, and 2:1:1:2) were each presented at six different note rates (very slow to very fast). Each trial

Modeling the tendency for music to induce movement in humans: first correlations with low-level audio descriptors across music genres.

Two descriptors corresponding to the density of events between beats and the salience of the beat, respectively, were strongly correlated with groove across domains, and systematic deviations from strict positions on the metrical grid, so-called microtiming, did not play any significant role.

Synchronization error of drum kit playing with a metronome at different tempi by professional drummers

the present study examined the synchronization error (SE) of drum kit playing by professional drummers with an auditory metronome, focusing on the effects of motor effectors and tempi. Fifteen

Participatory Discrepancies and the Perception of Beats in Jazz

A POPULAR THEORY HOLDS THAT "SWING" STEMS specifically from asynchronous timing between bass and drums in their shared articulation of the beat, a phenomenon Charles Keil has dubbed "participatory

TIME DISCRIMINATION IN A MONOTONIC, ISOCHRONOUS SEQUENCE

In acoustic communication timing seems to be an exceedingly important aspect. The just noticeable difference (jnd) for small perturbations of an isochronous sequence of sounds is particularly

Detecting deviations from metronomic timing in music: Effects of perceptual structure on the mental timekeeper

The results suggest that aspects of perceived musical structure influence the predictions of mental timekeeping mechanisms, thereby creating a subliminal warping of experienced time.

The Perception of Musical Rhythms

A simple theory is proposed of how a listener may infer the rhythm of such a sequence by comparing the note lengths, and it is assumed that the listener forms an idea of the rhythm as the sequence unfolds, constructing and eliminating metrical hypotheses in the light of what he hears.

Toward objective measurement and evaluation of jazz piano performance via MIDI-based groove quantize templates

The purpose of this study was to (a) objectively measure and analyze performance deviations from mechanical regularity for three jazz pianists via MIDI-based "groove quantize" procedures and (b)
